This past weekend I interviewed five different people who are from different education backgrounds. Mariam and Javier are both Freshman in college and living on campus at Bloomsburg University, Kaitlin and Kelsey are both in high school, and Virnesha has graduated from high school and not currently enrolled in college. The graphs below show a breakdown of each person's schedule of their average day. After creating the graphs I examined them made some interesting observations.
Before I looked at the graphs, I predicted that Kelsey, Kaitlin and Virnesha spent more time sleeping than Mariam and Javier because in the past I have heard that college kids get less sleep then people in high school. When I looked at the graphs I did not see this pattern. Instead I saw that everyone I interviewed slept for roughly the same amount of time. Another thing that I predicted was that the girls that I interviewed would spend more time in the bathroom on an average day than the boys I interviewed. When I looked at the graphs my prediction came true because the girls did spend more time in the bathroom than Javier. The graph also shows that the high school students spend more time in school than the college students. Kelsey and Kaitlin spend an average of seven hours at school whereas Javier and Mariam spend an average of three hours at school. The last thing I found interesting was that everyone I interviewed, that is in school, is involved in some kind of school activity. I found this interesting because it was cool for me to see that while people put most of their time in school and studying, they still made time to do something that they enjoyed.
Although these people are in different cultural settings, they are not that different. The biggest differences were between the people who were in school, either high school or college, and the person who isn't in school. The people in school are one group and the people who aren't in school are in another group. I think that being in either cultural group means to have be similar in some way. In this case the students share going to school together. To be in this particular group means to be a part of a community that wants to continue their education in a typical school setting. The students are in this group because they share an interest in learning. Within this big group there are subgroups. One sub group is high school and the other group is college. These graphs above show that high school students and college students share similar schedules but are still different and distinct to be categorized as two groups.
To me, being a part of the group of people that aren't in school means that they just aren't in school anymore. Although Virnesha is no longer in school she still spends the similar amount of time in activities than people in school. She and the other females that I interviewed spend around the same amount of time in the bathroom. Therefore, even though I studied two different groups, everyone has shown to be similar in the end.
This is a picture of my friend's laptop. She goes to West Chester University and is taking Arabic classes. She thought it would be better to study with some tasty friends. Yummy!
This is a picture of another one of my friend's. In this picture she was just moving into her dorm room. This was the beginning of her creating her space that will soon be her home away from home.
This picture of my friend and her roommate in their doom room. Unlike Kelsey's room Jen and her roommate have bunk beds.
